Welcome!
Welcome to the Offroad Syndicate, a mountain bike club and host of Saskatchewan mountain bike events. If you are new and want to get involved, you should check out our Weekly Race Series. If you are looking for more of a challenge you're welcome to race our Sask Cup event the Wascana Challenge mountain bike race, or take the ultimate challenge at the XC8: 8 Hour Enduro. If you like biking, you should join us.
Nov 12th @ 2pm at 2205 Victoria Avenue (Sports Hall of Fame).
We're switching it up a bit (in more ways than one).
Firstly, we are running the meeting on a Saturday at 2pm so everyone can make it.
The most important part of this meeting, is YOU. Its your chance to come out, talk with your Executive, to suggest (or complain) about what we're doing right and wrong.
The other important part of the Meeting is the elections, where we decide the 2012 ORS Executive.
For those who are not aware (that's most of you) .. Jay will not be returning as Club President for 2012. He is taking a break from the lead role, unless a suitable replacement does not come forward.
We will also be giving away CASH to our awesome Sask Cup racing team, $20 for all their races this season that they wore our club Jersey.
Finally, We have the option to go out for drinks/food afterwards to celebrate another great biking year.
Wascana Trails - Theft (x2)
posted 2011-09-04 20:05:02 by Offroad Syndicate
"To whom this may concern,
I was at the Wascana trails today (sept 3) between 12noon and 1pm today, and had my honda Civic broken into. There was another guy with his kids who also got his minivan broken into. I lost my GPS, sunglasses, blackberry etc.... and passenger side window.
I have made the RCMP police report, so they will have it on record. I used google latitude to track my phone to watch them drive to South Regina, then Pilot Butte and back to North Regina. Since they only track using cell phone towers, the police can't doing anything with it, but i though i'd share anyways!

Be advised, this is the second theft in 3 weeks. Both occurred on Saturday afternoons.
Wascana Trails - Major Theft

"Our firm, Sustainable Trails 2011 Ltd. has been constructing recreational trails at this site for the past two weeks for IMBA Canada and the Regina Handcycle Club.
Yesterday, Saturday we experienced a major theft, over $12,000.00 from our vehicles. We were one of sever vehicles broken into. I personally lost my 2008-09 Specialized Enduro Carbon. As this is an expensive and rare bike, I feel that someone out there might spot it."
As a major user of the area, Offroad Syndicate members need to be aware that this is not the first incident and that theft from vehicles at Wascana Trails is a growing issue. Do not leave valuables, wallets, cameras, cell phones. Ensure bikes are locked and if unlocked, not left unattended.
Most likely the bike will be stripped down for its parts and sold separately, but if anyone sees this bike, please notify the people listed in the attached PDF.

11th Annual Family Fun Bike Ride for Regina Palliative Care Inc

My name is Jeff Christiansen and I am Executive Director of Regina Palliative Care Inc.
Our organization supports Palliative Care Services in the Regina QuAppelle Health Region and delivers Bereavement support programs through the Greystone Bereavement Centre here in Regina.
Again this year we are hard at work preparing, together with our partners, for the Nickys Cafι and Impact Fun Bike Ride for Palliative Care and the Tour de Lumsden corporate challenge event which will be held on August 28th.
The proceeds from this race are critical to our organization and they help us continue to support the over 1500 individuals and families who are cared for in Palliative Care and Bereavement programs in our community each year.
Due to the previous race cancellation, nothing is mowed or marked at Wascana Trails. We have moved the event BACK to Douglas Park.
See you tonight!

NWBII Wascana Challenge - Volunteers!
posted 2011-06-17 17:43:22 by Offroad Syndicate
Hello! With our NWBII XC race coming up next weekend, we need to start getting a list of volunteers to help out. If you or a family member or friend can help out at the race on Sunday that would be great! we will look after you for food and water and be entered for the prizes.
Remember that volunteering for your club is a requirement to receive your Race Subsidy, so if you help out just once this year you qualify to Receive $20 per mtb race you finish. http://www.offroadsyndicate.com/racersubsidy.php
We need volunteer help for :
Thursday June 23. Trail work. cutting grass, trimming branches, getting the trails ready to race on safely. There is a group heading out Thursday afternoon until finished or sunset whatever comes first! Meet us out there anytime, bring sunscreen and bug spray. Send us an email before hand so we know when to look for you, It can be hard to find someone when they are trimming trails.
Saturday June 25. Trail marking. We need to mark the race course. fairly easy task that takes very little time with lots of help, but with no help it can take all afternoon. we just put up signs and stakes with tape around corners. Again, let us know if you can help beforehand so we can arrange what time we will be doing this.
Sunday June 26. Race day. We need a few positions filled for race day. Finish timers, course marshals, and racer sign on help and course marking tear down. All very easy jobs, no previous experience necessary. Bring your bike and a bag if you would like to help course tear down. You get to ride the trails.
Please email us if you can help out in any of these positions! Your help is very appreciated because without it nobody gets to race!!

Crash Update - Susan B
posted 2011-06-12 15:38:41 by Offroad Syndicate
Quick update on the Crash on Wednesday night.
Just got off the phone with Susan, checking up on her (others have been checking in with her as well). She is in good spirits and doing pretty well, actually.
The crash off the start on Wednesday left her with a dislocated shoulder and resulted in an ambulance trip to the Emergency Room on Wednesday.
Susan wanted to thank Phil, Kim and Jeremy, and everyone else who helped out, but especially the fellow who "had her back" the entire time, who actually gave up his race to ensure she was okay. (A name to put to the face would be helpful).
I personally can't remember the last serious crash we had on Wednesday night (the first one in probably 15+ years that required an ambulance), but this is the reason we require club membership, for insurance purposes. As a sanctioned event, Susan is covered for her expenses related to the crash. Its also another reminder that we need to be as safe as possible, but crashes do happen and we've all had them.
Otherwise, the on behalf of the Club, we hope Susan a speedy recovery. Judging by how she was on the phone, she will be riding again in no time.

We acknowledge the issue and would like to apologize to anyone who was left behind. For the next trail ride we will split the groups according to ability and make sure there are designated leaders for each.
In addition to feedback, we would also appreciate your help. If you know the Wascana trails, and would be willing to lead a group, please contact us.

The Canadian premiere of the Tour de France movie Chasing Legends will take place on February 2nd at Cineplex theatres across Canada. This is a unique chance to see a cycling film on the big screen.
We were fortunate enough to receive a preview copy of Ken Bell's latest feature. The film covers the 2009 Tour de France, the year that Lance Armstrong came out of retirement. This was an excellent year for the Tour, with the battle between Armstrong, his team mate Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck.
While much of the race footage will be familiar to anyone who followed the Tour on TV, what makes this film special is the access the film makers were given by Team HTC-Columbia. HTC-Columbia allowed the film crew into their team cars, team bus and hotel rooms, offering a unique and rare behind the scenes look at how a team runs.
We got to see the plans the team made before and during stages, and joy when Mark Cavendish took his five stage victories. We saw the crushing disappointment when George Hincapie missed grabbing the Yellow Jersey by a mere five seconds, plus the discussion about why Garmin-Slipstream worked to deny him this honour.
There are multiple interviews with members of the HTC-Columbia team (riders and staff), plus Lance Armstrong, Jens Voigt (always one of the best), Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen, cycling great Eddy Merckx, and an incredible one with 97 year old Pierre Cogan, the oldest living Tour de France rider, who raced his first Tour in 1935, fought in the Second World War (and was a POW), before returning post-War to finish seventh in 1950. His final Tour was in 1951.
Bell manages to capture both the excitement of the Tour and the effort that it demands. It should be spectacular on the big screen.

XC8 Trail Cutting

Greetings offroaders, we are planning a few days of trail work at Buffalo Pound to get things ready for XC8 and fall riding fun. The first day is this Sunday, lead by myself. On the agenda are "Twister", "Weeping Fee", and perhaps "Roots" depending on how much help I can enlist. If you love riding at BP, here's your chance to help keep the trails great. All you need is some decent work clothes, gloves, eye protection and some energy, the club will provide the tools. Tools being gas powered weed wackers and hand trimmers. Hand trimming is an easy and fun job, you can ride the trails and just stop and cut back any branches that are intruding on your line.
If you are willing and able to come help let me know in advance by emailing me at kris_abrahamson@hotmail.com

Hello fellow mountain bike enthusiasts!
I am once again contacting you in my (volunteer) position as the Saskatchewan IMBA Rep. (International Mountain Biking Association)
The Sask. Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture & Sport will be conducting a survey of trail users to get a better idea of what people (like us) are looking for in our parks.
They would like to hear from at least 200 mountain bikers from around the province. This will give them a solid data base to assess interests and preferences.
If you love riding trails, this is a chance to have your say and input to the provincial government.
Sask. Parks will be distributing cards to some bike shops next week.
The cards will make people aware of the survey as well as list the web-site for a survey participation request form.
Parks will also work with the SCA to get as many bike club members to participate as possible. But anyone who likes to bike on trails is encouraged to share their views club member or not.
Please help get the word out about this survey and encourage as many people as possible to participate.
Thanks for your help.

Beater Bike Championship
posted 2010-06-23 17:45:41 by Offroad Syndicate
Hello Offroaders, it's that time of the year again, time to dust off that winter singlespeed, that 1988 Tomac wannabe, that Wal-Mart dual suspension rig (eek!) and get down to business for the 2010 Singlespeed and Beater Championship! This years race takes place tomorrow, June 23rd, same time, same place. On the line is the coveted ORS Singlespeed Champ beer mug! No, not the one won by Pedro last year, I'll get a new one, one that says 2010 on it.
Rules are simple, ride a bike you would not normally race on, preferably a singlespeeder. Note that any bike can be made into a singlespeeder, and be eligible for the cup, by picking a gear and using it for the entire race! If your only bike happens to be a $10,000 plastic bike with XXX on it, you can run that too, but honestly, why would you want to? Worthless bonus points for dressing like a fool.
Post race beer and brats at my place, 285 Angus Cres.
Hopefully the weather holds out for us, if we get rained out we'll move the race back to next week. No additional emails means we are a GO, I'll send out a notice if we have to postpone, due to biblical rains.
If you have not already purchased your Club Membership for 2010, you should do so before June 15th.
This is the deadline that determines our funding from Sask Sport for this year. It is also very important that you have your membership for insurance purposes for the Wednesday night training races.
The Affinity YMCA Urban Challenge is coming June 19th, 2010 to beautiful Wascana and Douglas parks.
The Affinity YMCA of Regina's Urban Challenge (formally known as the YMCA Echo
Challenge which was held out at Echo Valley Provincial Park for the last 12
years) is being held in Regina this year on Saturday, June 19th at the
Centre of the Arts. This event is a major fundraiser for YMCA of Regina Strong Kids Campaign.
The event is has 4 stages consisting of the following:
1. A run portion to Douglas Park (4km)
2. Mountain bike portion through Douglas Park Hill area (8km)
3. Trail run from Douglas Park to the southeast side of Wascana Lake
(across the lake from the marina) (3km)
4. Canoe/kayak portion (3km) and finishes with a short run to the Centre
of the Arts.
5. Each team (2-5 people) or individual must collect puzzle pieces along
the way and put the puzzle together at the finish line.
The top fundraiser prize is a trip for 2 anywhere Westjet Flies!
This will be a great event and we anticipate a large participation from the
community as its format is very unique and exciting.

Get to Racing - April 28th
posted 2010-04-21 13:34:55 by Offroad Syndicate
The first Wednesday night race is on April 28th. To get you in the mood to ride your bike, here's something awesome you should not try at home:
My sister in law is an ESL teacher at Judge Bryant School and she is looking for bikes for the ESL students. Many of the EAL students at Judge Bryant School are refugees and have lived in Canada for less than a year. Could you help us find bikes for these kids? We will take the bikes in any condition and pick up is not a problem. Thank you for your support.
What is needed:
- 50-60 bikes for students ages 5-13.
- bike helmets and locks
For Whom: 50-60 EAL students ages 5-13 years old

Two Sask Boys raising funds for Diabetes
posted 2010-03-20 23:22:50 by Offroad Syndicate
Dear Offroad Syndicate,
Both Kelly and I cut our teeth racing in Saskatchewan. I was the Cameco Cup Champ back in 1994, yah we are old. There are still some people there that remember us, mainly Saskatoon but a lot of us have moved away and in fact Kelly, Kevin, Cory, Jake and myself were some of the first Saskatchewan cyclists to move out to the coast to take our cycling to the next level. Some have gone on to build some amazing lives through cycling and have helped to contribute to the development of fellow Saskatchewan cyclists as time has moved on.
I thought that the chance to win a Day 6 ride with the BC Bike Race might appeal to a Saskatchewan rider and hopefully inspire a few others to do the event. We are looking for people to pledge their support to Team Diabetes and they can also help us promote Squamish by joining the Facebook page that I created for Bike Squamish. We will have draw prizes for those on the facebook page (with the grand prize being a day 6 ride in Squamish with a BC Bike Race jersey and bag).
We have just launched the new XC8 website and Early Bird registration is now open.
You will save 23% by registering early until May 15th. We are going to bring you the best XC8 ever, and if you haven't been .. what are you waiting for?

Offroad Syndicate Team Clothing
posted 2010-01-25 16:18:40 by Offroad Syndicate
Greetings Offroaders, we are planning another order of our cool new green and white team clothing. We would like to have the order placed by early February so we can ensure we have the goods by the start of race season. We don't have a sizing kit this time around so be advised that it fits a bit small so it is a good idea to go one size larger than usual. Also if you just don't know what size send an email and I'll let you know what similarly sized riders ordered last time around.
Cost is $80 per item (shorts, jerseys). We can order short sleeve and long sleeve jerseys, shorts and bibs.
Also we are selling off our remaining "classic" orange and white kit for a steal of a deal. $125 gets you a pair of high quality shorts, a jersey and a jacket!
Remember that to qualify for the ORS racer subsidy you need to be sporting either the new, or classic, kit.
Please send order information to:

Apparently a number of cars were broken into.
If you could somehow get the word out to the cycling community to keep their eyes open as they drive/ride around that area it would be
greatly appreciated. The photos were on various media, disk, sd, etc. and if anyone happened to be out there and saw anything odd... please phone the police! If anyone finds media or bags out that way please

Even if you don't race, come anyway to relax, chat, and spend time with the club before the long cold winter.
Dutch Cycle is bringing out a bunch of prizes, and I remember last year EVERYONE left with something.
.. But wait, there's more!
Freddy will be on site and he's bringing in the big guns .. the FREE FOOD! What?
Theo Bill's restaurant will be catering pizza, salad, and drinks. The meal will be on-site following the race. If the weather turns bad on us we'll go to the restaurant instead... we got it all covered. This is on Dutch's tab so we hope everyone comes out.
Everyone is welcome.

The race is coming fast and we are marking trail this weekend for the race. If you want to take some pride and get your volunteer time, come to Wascana for 9am on July 11th.
As usual, we need volunteers for all kinds of fun stuff on Sunday. From Race Marshall, Set-up, Tear-down, Registration, Food, etc. All volunteers are treated as racers, so you get all the cool stuff the racers do. Thanks!

*The* Race of 2009 Gets a New Date
posted 2009-06-20 13:22:07 by Offroad Syndicate
Greetings Offroad Syndicants, due to the sheer awesomeness of the 2009 Regina Singlespeed and Beater Championships and the fact that we know you just cant wait to dust off that 1992 purple anodized bike collecting dust in your garage we have moved up the date of the race to THIS WEEK (June 24th) from Canada Day. (Ulterior motive being we think some of you may have better things to do on Canada Day!)
Some of you may be new to this race so let me try to spell it out with a few simple rules (we all know that rules are meant to be )
- Singlespeeds rock
- If you dont have a singlespeed an old beater is a fine stand in. A singlespeed beater is perfect.
- Whats a beater you ask? A bike that is worth less on the street corner than a cold ½ drank double double from Timmies qualifies.
- Anything purchased from Wal-Mart definitely qualifies. Heck even a cross bike qualifies due to how bad they suck on the Wednesday night course!
- Fancy cycling gear is banned. Dress as clown like as you can dream up. Dont worry about people laughing at you, most people laugh at cyclists in lycra anyways!
- Have fun!
If somehow you dont have a beater bike, or are just too posh to ride it, please come anyways on your XTR equipped wonder-bike. It will be a good time for all. After the race well head out for some social time. Bonus here being we are all riding bikes that we can lock up (if we even need to!). It might be a good idea to bring a change of clothes though. If you can only make it to one Wednesday night race this year (you know who you are!) make sure its the 2009 Regina Singlespeed and Beater Championship!

Kris Abrahamson

Check out this video from the Canmore XC race this season. You can see club members Dean Etienne (11th in Expert), Andrew Thomas (3rd in Elite), and a bunch of the Dead Goat riders we know and love.
Hey, I just wanted to pass along some info about a marathon/enduro
race at a very nice venue in Morden Manitoba coming up on June 7th.
The course is a real jewel - really fun flowing single track around a
lake.
The SCA High Performance Committee is sending a team to the Canada Cup in Edmonton on June 12-14. The trip will leave from Regina on Friday morning at 6am, pick up racers in Saskatoon at 9am and continue to Edmonton. Pre ride the course on Friday; the race is on Saturday and the return trip on Sunday.
Currently the SCA is planning to take the van only, but if there is enough interest we can attach the SCA trailer and open additional spots for SCA licensed riders to join the trip. The cost will be approximately $185 and will include transport in the SCA van from Regina to Edmonton, shared accommodations at the Lister Dorms at the University of Alberta, and race day feed support. The fee does not include food expenses or race entry.
We still require a driver for this trip, if you know of anyone interested have them contact me for details. There is an opportunity for the driver to race as well.
Please let me know by June 1 if you are interested. The spot(s) will be filled on a first come first serve basis.
